What do I need to run First AD?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on an Apple silicon Mac. The current build is compiled for Apple silicon only — it will not launch on an Intel Mac. No account and no internet connection are required to use it.

Is it available to buy yet?

Not yet. First AD is finished software running on real productions with 1st ADs we work with directly, ahead of a general release. It is not on the App Store and there is no public download. If you are already using it, everything on this page applies to you.

The app says it is from an unidentified developer.

That applies to builds sent to you directly rather than through the App Store. Right-click the app, choose Open, then Open again in the dialog. You only need to do this once per Mac.

What happens the first time I open it?

The app never opens empty. On a first launch it creates a sample production you can explore and change freely. To start your own, use New Project, ⌘N, or one of the production-type cards on the home screen — all three open the same short wizard, which asks for the title, production company, director, 1st AD and production type. You can leave fields empty and still create the project.

Do I need an AI key?

No. The AI features are optional and stay off until you add your own key. Without one, the whole working path — script import, the breakdown, the scheduling engine, the board, the calendar, the Day Out of Days, conflicts, reports, call sheets, printing and Set Mode — runs on your Mac with no internet and no key at all.

To turn them on: Settings ▸ AI, paste your provider key, press Validate. Validation uses a free check, never a paid test call. Keys are stored in the macOS Keychain, never in your project file. There is a separate optional key for storyboard and mood-board image generation. Every paid run is metered against a per-project ceiling you set, and a cost estimate is shown before anything spends.

Which providers receive what is written out in the privacy policy.

Which script files can I import?

Final Draft (.fdx), screenplay PDF, Fountain and plain text — plus a tagged schedule export (.sex) from other scheduling software, which reports every value it could not map rather than dropping it. A new draft of a script already in the project can be imported as a revision, which produces a diff and a warning about scheduled or pinned scenes that would be removed, rather than a replacement.

Where are my projects stored, and is anything uploaded?

On your Mac, under ~/Library/Application Support/FirstAD/. There is no First AD server and no account — nothing is uploaded unless you use an AI feature or send a call sheet. Settings ▸ App Data shows exactly what is on disk per production, including anything left behind by productions that no longer exist, and can remove it.

How do I back up a production?

• Snapshots (⇧⌘S) save a named version inside the project; restore any of them from File ▸ Snapshots.
• File ▸ Export ▸ Project JSON… writes the whole thing to a single file you can archive or hand over.
• Copy the project folder out of ~/Library/Application Support/FirstAD/Projects/ in Finder.

Work saves itself a couple of seconds after you stop typing; ⌘S forces it. ⌘Z undoes everything, including an approved AI proposal, as a single step.

How do I export or print reports?

Open Reports and pick one — it previews as real paginated pages. Export as PDF, Excel or CSV from the export bar, or press ⌘P to print. Your production name and logo appear on every page once set under Org Branding. A single person's Day Out of Days can be exported from their profile in Cast & Extras.

How do I send a call sheet?

Pick a shoot day and the sheet builds itself from the board. Set up your own outgoing mail account under Settings ▸ Email (host, port, TLS) and use Send test email to prove it before a real send. Most mail providers require an app-specific password rather than your normal login password; it is stored in the macOS Keychain.

Sending is never automatic. You preview the PDF, press Approve & Send, and confirm the exact recipient count — only then does anything go out. Afterwards a delivery log shows which addresses were accepted and which failed, with the server's own reply, so you can re-send just the failures.

Why is the app asking for notification or calendar permission?

Timed tasks and calendar events fire real macOS notifications at the time you set and at a lead you choose, including when First AD isn't running — the first timed item asks once. Calendar access is requested only when you click Sync to Calendar; the sync is one-way and opt-in, and it never deletes anything from your calendar.

How do I change the app's language?

Settings ▸ Language. Eight are available: Türkçe, English, Español, Français, Italiano, 中文, 日本語, Português. Pick one and press Apply — it takes effect after a relaunch, which the app offers to do for you, flushing unsaved work first. The built-in manual always follows the language the app is running in. Industry terms (INT/EXT, DOOD, strip, boneyard) stay in English in every language, deliberately.

Where is the manual?

Inside the app: the Help menu (⌘?) or the Manual entry in the sidebar, just above Settings. Twenty-three pages, written in all eight languages, searchable.

Something is wrong. How do I report it?

Email support@studionightshift.co. There is no reporting form inside the app, and the app sends us nothing on its own. Please include the app version (in the project window's sidebar footer), your macOS version, what you did step by step, what you expected and what happened instead. A screenshot of the screen it happened on helps a great deal.

Please don't attach your project file unless we ask. Project documents contain your cast and crew's personal data, and we would rather not receive it.

Known issues

Current cosmetic issues we are aware of. None of them affects your data or what gets printed.

• Call sheet PDF, top contacts block. A long role title can overlap the name and phone column. Shorter titles print correctly, and the underlying data is intact.
• Breakdown, estimated hours. The estimated-hours line can be visually cut off in a narrow window. Display only.
• Call sheet editor, agency and client rows. Long role names appear truncated in the editor field. The full text is stored and prints correctly.
• Agency, client and video-village sections appear in the call sheet editor for every production type. Left empty they don't print, so the printed sheet stays clean.
• Template Library. A few labels on that screen are still shown in English in all languages.
• Manual screenshots. English and Turkish have their own screenshots; the other six languages show the English ones with a note saying so.

Updates

First AD has no automatic updater and never contacts us to check for one. While it is in pre-release, we send new builds to you directly and tell you what changed. When it reaches general release, updates will arrive through the App Store.

Ayarlar ▸ E-posta altında kendi giden posta hesabınızı tanımlayın (sunucu, port, TLS) ve gerçek gönderimden önce Test e-postası gönder ile doğrulayın. Çoğu sağlayıcı normal parolanız yerine uygulamaya özel parola ister; parola macOS Anahtar Zinciri'nde saklanır.

Gönderim asla otomatik değildir. PDF'i önizler, Onayla ve Gönder'e basar ve tam alıcı sayısını teyit edersiniz — ancak o zaman çıkar. Lütfen uygulama sürümünü (proje penceresinin kenar çubuğu altında yazar), macOS sürümünüzü, adım adım ne yaptığınızı, ne beklediğinizi ve bunun yerine ne olduğunu yazın. Olayın gerçekleştiği ekranın görüntüsü çok yardımcı olur.

Biz istemedikçe lütfen proje dosyanızı eklemeyin. Proje belgeleri oyuncu ve ekibinizin kişisel verilerini içerir; bunları almamayı tercih ederiz.
